It’s not a particularly spectacular rehab project, but Iowa City says their City Hall boiler system is on its last legs and needs replacing.

The City Council will be meeting tonight and one of the items on the agenda is a resolution approving plans, specifications, contract details and estimates of cost for the system and BAS, or Building Automation System.

In a memo prepared by city staffer Brett Zimmerman, he explains that the city’s boiler system is designed to cycle between two boilers for longevity purposes. He says the existing system has been in operation since 1992 and is currently operating on one boiler. One is completely non-operational and the other has about three to four years of life left.

Staff recommends a complete replacement of the boiler system and the temperatures control system, which is partially outdated.

Upgrading the boiler system will increase efficiency by approximately 12 percent, and upgrading the temperature controls would result in reductions in energy consumption and energy cost as well as reduced maintenance costs.

Estimates put the project at $487,000.

A public hearing on the project will be part of Tuesday night’s council meeting, with bid letting set for July 30th with the hope of construction starting by the middle of August.
