ICPD responds to two reports of shots fired, incluidng in the area of last week’s shooting

Iowa City Police respoded to shots fired in two areas of the city overnight, including the area where shots were fired last week near Mercer Park.
The first report occurred at 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of Benton and Michael Streets. The reporting person stated that while he was inside his vehicle near this location, one of his van windows was damaged by a gunshot. Occupants of nearby residences also reported hearing a single gunshot.
The second report came at 3:13 a.m. when emergency calls came in regarding multiple gunshots heard near the intersection of Wayne and Arthur Streets. That’s near where shots were fired on June 13th. The ICPD responded to the 1200 block of Baker Street at 5:51 p.m. that day after receiving multiple reports of gunshots being fired from one car at another occupied car. Investigating officers were able to locate and collect potential evidence from the area, including shell casings and bullets.
There have been no reported injuries from any of these incidents and arrests have yet to be made.
These events are not thought to be random and are being investigated by ICPD investigators as possibly related.
Residents near Mercer Park can expect to see increased police presence in the area while the investigations continue. A neighborhood meeting was hosted by the ICPD at Mercer Aquatic Center/Scanlon Gym at 5:30 p.m. Monday to discuss the recent incidents.
