An Iowa City man with warrants for drug possession was taken into custody after leading police on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning.

According to police, 33-year-old Mario Glee of Westwinds Drive was pulled over near the intersection of Penn Street and Interstate 380 shortly after 2am for a malfunctioning brake light. Rather than stopping for officers, Glee took off at a high rate of speed, leading police on a chase that ended near Melrose Avenue and Mormon Trek Boulevard.

Glee allegedly jumped out of the vehicle when he stopped and fled on foot, but was eventually caught by Johnson County deputies. He was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, and smelled strongly of ingested alcohol. Glee also allegedly admitted that he had been drinking, but refused a PBT and Datamaster testing.

Glee had warrants out from an incident at Coral Ridge Mall on April 28th, where he and a companion left a purse in a store and later tried to reclaim the property from security. The clutch purse contained 16 individually packaged zip-lock bags of weed and Glee allegedly made comments to officers that the marijuana was his.

Glee was taken into custody and charged with a controlled substance violation and Possession, 3rd or subsequent for the April incident, and OWI first offense, interference with official acts, driving while barred, eluding involving OWI, and eluding over 25 miles per hour over the speed limit for Sunday’s incident. The drug charges come with a maximum sentence of ten years; Sunday’s charges could add an additional ten years to his sentence if he’s convicted.
