Three people have been killed after the car they were riding in attempted to make a U-turn on I80 Sunday.
The Iowa State Patrol says that the vehicle, a 2010 Kia, was traveling westbound at about 1pm when it attempted to turn around using the “no U-turn” crossover lane when it was broadsided by a semi.
The Kia came to rest in the median; the semi in the westbound lanes. The semi was still drivable. Westbound traffic was stopped on I-80 for some time while the accident was processed.
Two other people were injured and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Their identities or conditions have not been released.
The names of the fatalities are being withheld pending notification of family, but it’s being reported that they were children aged 11, 12 and 13.
The accident remains under investigation.
