Citing a shortfall in funding from the state legislature, the Iowa Board of Regents is recommending a 3.9 percent tuition increase for the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
Tuition at the smaller University of Northern Iowa would remain the same, under the plan.
The board originally stated that they would hold increases at three percent, provided that lawmakers fully funded their suggested increases.
The 2019 legislative session provided an education budget of $985 million, but the increase in appropriations requested by the Regents fell short by a third. They had requested an $18 million increase and only received $12 million.
The Regents have yet to say how they will divvy up the increase between the schools, but UNI is expected to request a large portion of it given the fact that they won’t see an increase in tuition revenue.
The board is meeting by telephone Wednesday afternoon for a first vote on the issue, hoping to finalize the fall rates at their June meeting in Ames.
