One day after Mayor Jim Throgmorton announced he would not seek reelection to the Iowa City City Council, a manager at ACT is throwing her hat into the ring.

49-year-old Megan Alter, a test development manager at ACT, announced in a Wednesday news release plans to run for an at-large council seat. Alter moved to Iowa City in 1995 to complete her graduate studies at the University of Iowa. She taught at the UI as a visiting professor in the English Department and the Sexuality Studies program.

Alter lives with her husband and two children in the South District, where she’s involved in the South District Neighborhood Association. She’s also a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and sits on the board of the Iowa Women’s Foundation.

Alter says she wants to help build what she calls “a more inclusive and equitable city”.

Two at-large seats will be up for grabs this fall, including the seats of Throgmorton and Rockne Cole.
