IC man accused in robbery, shootout at IC Marketplace pleads guilty

An Iowa City man accused of a robbery and shots fired incident at the Iowa City Marketplace has pleaded guilty.
Online records show 29-year-old Michael Shapcott of Spruce Street reached a plea deal with prosecutors earlier this week.
Police say Shapcott and 27-year-old Sara Schrader, who lives with Shapcott on Spruce Street, went to Aaron’s Rental on the west end of the shopping center the afternoon of Sept. 3. Schrader allegedly went inside and took cash from the register. When an employee stopped her, police say Schrader fled to Shapcott’s vehicle.
The pair are then accused of firing multiple rounds from handguns at the store as they left, with police saying at least two of those shots entered the store and several others hit the building.
No injuries were reported.
The two were initially charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage, and Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence.
Last month Schrader reached a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to two years of probation and received a deferred judgment on roughly $1,500 in fines.
Terms of Shapcott’s plea deal have not been released. A sentencing hearing is set for May 8th.
