A Williamsburg man is in custody after fleeing a traffic stop that eventually found him up a tree in the Iowa River.

Arrest reports indicate that 47-year-old Jereme Goltz of Terry Drive was stopped for allegedly failing to signal a turn at the intersection of Amana Road and Blain Cemetery Road in Swisher Saturday morning.

While the officer was running Goltz’s license, Goltz allegedly drove off, ignoring the officer’s lights and siren. He drove west on Amana Road until he left his vehicle and ran into the woods. The officer followed, ordering him to stop. Goltz allegedly continued to run and ended up in the Iowa River, where he swam to a tree and climbed it.

Goltz was taken into custody and charged with eluding and interference with official acts, as well as the failure to give or use his turn signal. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 13 months in prison.
