When it comes to construction, the University of Iowa has – mostly – kept it local.
Information provided to the Iowa Board of Regents shows of the $380.5 million paid to contractors by the UI in the last four fiscal years, 90.5 percent of that has been to in-state contractors. UI Health Care’s $106.7 million has gone exclusively to in-state contractors.
Unsurprisingly, the largest amount of that has been ultra-local, with the UI paying $92 million to Johnson County contractors and $104 million to those from Linn County. The next largest payments went to Dubuque County contractors, who received $51.5 million.
Contractors in a total of 22 counties in the state were used by the UI.
UIHC also stayed close to home, paying Johnson County contractors $84.6 million and Linn County contractors $12.1 million. UIHC used contractors in only six counties.
Regents officials also note of the $35.9 million paid to out-of-state contractors, 75 percent of subcontractors were from in-state.
The total paid by all Regents’ institutions to contractors over that four-year period was $673.5 million, with 80 percent of that staying in-state. Iowa State University used in-state contractors 58.6 percent of the time, while the University of Northern Iowa came in at 95.4 percent.
