A North Liberty man was taken into custody over the weekend after he was allegedly found with a firearm despite being convicted of domestic abuse.

Iowa City police stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Carroll Street and Highland Avenue just before 3am Saturday due to a non-functioning brake light.  The odor of marijuana was reportedly detected upon contact, and the occupants of the vehicle were removed to conduct a probable cause search.

Officers found a firearm located behind the seat occupied by 36-year-old Antonio Pearson of Sugar Creek Lane. He allegedly admitted that the firearm was his, and the driver of the vehicle alleged that he saw Pearson place something behind the seat when the traffic stop was initiated.

A check of Pearson’s criminal record showed two previous convictions for domestic abuse assault, which legally prohibits him from possessing a firearm. He was arrested and charged with a Class D felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
