An Iowa City man has been taken into custody on a warrant stemming from a domestic abuse incident that occurred earlier this year.
Police say 30-year-old Contrell Martin of Indigo Court got into an argument with a woman who is the mother of their minor child January 31st at approximately 9:30am at a residence on FInkbine Lane. The argument escalated when Martin allegedly hit the woman in the face with his fist, sending her to the floor. He then reportedly stood over her with his foot over her head, causing her to fear him stomping her.
Martin then allegedly attempted to drag the woman into a back bedroom to keep the neighbors from hearing her yelling. Police noted scratches to the woman’s shoulder and back and a bruise on her arm. She also complained of pain in her jaw.
Both the woman and Martin left the residence separately, but Martin allegedly came back and kicked the door in, causing $500 in damage.
Martin was already wanted on a 5th degree Theft warrant stemming from an incident on August 26th when he allegedly stole a 58 inch TV from a residence on 5th Street in Coralville. He and an accomplice attempted to put the TV in the trunk of a sedan, and ended up placing it in the back passenger seats.
Martin then got into the front passenger seat as the accomplice drove away.
He was taken into custody Monday morning, and faces charges of Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, 4th degree Criminal Mischief, and the theft charge. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
