Two Iowa City men are accused of assaulting another subject with a baseball bat while threatening them with a replica gun.

20-year-old Willie Garrett and 19-year-old Leshawn Garrett…who live together on Muscatine Avenue…were booked into the Johnson County Jail Friday morning. Iowa City Police say the two met another person at Mercer Park at about 6:00 on the night of February 22nd. Willie Garrett was reportedly armed with a replica Glock 17 BB gun, while Leshawn Garrett allegedly hit the person with a baseball bat. The incident was captured on video. Iowa City Police say Willie Garrett admitted to brandishing the replica gun to scare the other person.

The Garretts are each charged with Going Armed With Intent and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on both counts, they each face a maximum of seven years in prison.

Leshawn Garrett is also accused of violating his probation on charges stemming from a July 2023 incident that saw him reportedly threatening people with a knife during a pair of robbery attempts on the Ped Mall.
