The University of Iowa is seeking funding from the Board of Regents for what it’s calling a “near-total window replacement effort” for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

School officials are requesting an additional $7.5 million for the project, which would be added to $45 million that was approved in 2023. The window issue began with just two floors of faulty windows in 2021, leading to between $10 million and $15 million in expenses.

The UI has been involved in legal proceedings for years with the hospital’s contractors, Cupples International and Knutson Construction Services Midwest.

The Children’s Hospital first opened in 2017, with cracking and delamination of the windows developing a short time later.

The next Regents meeting is set for February 27th in Urbandale.
