Allegedly assaulting a woman and her daughter and threatening them with a knife has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

30-year-old Jony Montoya Bonilla of the Hilltop manufactured housing community was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 2:15 Friday morning. Iowa City Police say Montoya Bonilla was at a neighboring trailer just after 1 a.m. when he punched and kicked a woman in the face, head, ribs and arms. He also allegedly choked the woman, dragged her around the trailer by the hair and threatened to kill her and her daughter, who was present at the time of the incident.

At one point, Montoya Bonilla reportedly grabbed a knife and threatened the woman. Police say when the woman’s daughter tried to intervene, Montoya Bonilla threw a wooden fixture at her, injuring the girl’s left hand.

Montoya Bonilla allegedly took the woman’s cellphone when she tried to call 9-1-1, so she and her daughter fled the residence.

Arriving officers say they found Montoya Bonilla running out the back door of the trailer. He reportedly ignored commands to stop and ran southbound into the woods before he eventually stopped. Montoya Bonilla allegedly admitted to consuming six Michelob Ultras.

Montoya Bonilla is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Involving a Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow Causing Injury, Child Endangerment Causing Injury, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, Public Intoxication and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over 12 years in prison.
