A police chase on Interstate 380 reached speeds up to 120 miles per hour early Tuesday morning, leading to an Iowa City man’s arrest.
According to arrest records, just after 1:15 a.m. Johnson County deputies attempted a traffic stop on a 2015 Chrysler 300 that was travelling at 55 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone on North Dubuque Street near I-80. A chase ensued, and the vehicle took I-80 westbound to I-380 northbound. The vehicle reportedly was all over the roadway and was weaving in-between vehicles while reaching speeds up to 120 miles per hour. The driver, 20-year-old Demario Ray Salter of East Bloomington Street, was taken into custody after officers used stop sticks near the Penn Street exit in North Liberty. Salter is charged with Felony Eluding. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
Ray Salter faces an additional charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury after he allegedly struck a fellow inmate in the back of the head at the Johnson County Jail just before 7:15 Tuesday morning while the other man was on the phone.
Ray Salter is currently on probation after an incident last April when he was found with drugs and a firearm on Hawk Ridge Drive in Iowa City.
