A traffic stop for an expired registration led to the arrest of an area transient overnight.
Iowa City Police say at midnight Tuesday, an officer noticed a Suburu with registration that had expired back in October 2023. A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Southgate Avenue and Keokuk Street.
The occupant of the vehicle, 38-year-old Curtis Delavergne provided the name “Andrew Johnson” with a birthdate in 1989. A check of the information showed the name given was revoked. He was placed under arrest and then reportedly provided his true identity. A check using Johnson’s information showed his driving status was suspended.
A THC Pen was allegedly located on the driver’s seat, prompting a search that reportedly turned up a glass pipe to smoke marijuana and a bag containing the substance.
Delavergne was charged with a 3rd or subs controlled substance violation, providing false ID information, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while suspended. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
