Obermueller named preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game
IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior starting pitcher Cade Obermueller was named the preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game, it was announced Thursday. The left-handed pitcher was also named to the preseason All-Big Ten team.
This is the third straight year that Iowa has had the Perfect Game Preseason Pitcher of the Year (Brody Brecht in 2024 and Ty Langenberg in 2023).
The Iowa City, Iowa, native went 4-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 13 starts in 2024. The left-hander struck out 73 batters over 59.2 innings. Obermueller allowed 26 earned runs on 39 hits.
Obermueller was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19th Round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft but elected to return to Iowa for his junior year. Obermueller was the 585th pick overall and was the 34th player drafted under head coach Rick Heller.
Iowa will open the 2025 season with a trip to Tampa, Florida, for a three-game series at South Florida from Feb. 14-16.
