An Iowa City man who had a warrant for his arrest for over six months was taken into custody Monday.

According to the criminal complaint, 21-year-old Jonathan Ortiz Perez of the Hilltop Mobile Home Community on Waterfront Drive was reported by the victim as the person who committed the assault.

According to the woman, at approximately 10pm on June 28th, she came home from work and noticed that Ortiz Perez was intoxicated.  She alleged that he became aggressive with her during the ensuing argument, and hit her in the left eye.  Police called to the scene observed the woman with bruising on her eyelid, as well as underneath and around the eye. The whites of her eye were also very red, indicating a popped blood vessel.

The victim told police that she was pregnant with Ortiz Perez’ child, and he knew that he was the father.

Ortiz Perez was located and arrested Monday. He faces a Class D felony charge of Domestic Abuse Assault of a Pregnant Person with Intent to inflict Injury, and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.

A no-contact order was issued between the couple by Judge Brandon Schrock.
