The University of Iowa has begun collecting data on hazing to include in its annual security report.

The change is required due to an update in the Clery Act that went into effect on the first of the year following passage of the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which was signed into law on December 23rd.

In addition to fraternities and sororities, the update would apply to clubs, teams, and any group that could be considered an organization where membership is maintained.

The UI chapter of  Alpha Delta Phi was suspended for hazing after UI Police, Iowa City Police, and the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the fraternity house on North Dubuque Street just before 12:45 on the morning of November 15th and reportedly found 56 pledges blindfolded in the basement with food thrown on them.

Effective Jan 1, 2025, colleges and universities are required to begin collecting hazing statistics to include in the annual security report.

This update comes following passage of the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which was signed into law on Dec. 23, 2024. The bill expands on the Clery Act’s foundation to address hazing.

In addition to fraternities and sororities, this update would apply to clubs, teams, and any group that could be considered an organization where membership is maintained.

For a full Clery definition of hazing, read the definitions section of our website.

Hazing statistics will first be included in the 2026 annual security report (2025 statistics).
