An Iowa City man police say fired a gun at his pregnant girlfriend has been given a suspended sentence.

Iowa City Police say in June of 2024 22-year-old Dayvon Long of South Dubuque Street was engaged in a domestic assault against his pregnant girlfriend at her Wayne Avenue apartment when he shoved her into a dresser, then to the ground. He then reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired a shot at her as she fled. The bullet hit a television in the bedroom. Three children were present during the incident.

Long was convicted of a felony in Wisconsin in 2023, making him ineligible to carry a weapon.
Long had initially faced numerous felony charges and a maximum prison sentence of 47 years. Earlier this week, he agreed to plead guilty to charges of Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, and Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage. He was given a pair of five-year suspended sentences and credit for time served. All other charges were dropped.
