Cedar Rapids Police have released their 2024 crime statistics and show major improvement in many categories.

According to a release from Police Chief David Dostal,  2024  shots-fired numbers were at a historic low; down almost 60 percent compared to the five-year-average (FYA) and 40 percent lower than 2023.

Violent Crime was down in 2024 compared to the five-year-average and to 2023. Domestic abuse numbers were encouraging, and officers continue to hold abusers accountable through the investigative and legal process. Robberies held steady with 2023.

Property crime came down overall in 2024, driven by a big drop in burglaries and thefts from vehicles.  The report says residents still need to focus on securing and locking their vehicles to further deter these “crimes of opportunity.”

Unfortunately, retail shoplifting continues to be problem; it’s up 24 percent from 2023 and almost 57 percent over the five  year average.

Another significant statistic is the confirmation of just one homicide in the city in 2024.
