The Iowa City Fire Department is reminding the public about the importance of maintaining smoke detectors and sprinkler systems as they detail a call for service on Sunday.
Crews were dispatched to the Quarters apartment complex just after 7am on reports of a kitchen fire. Upon arrival, the fire had been extinguished and the building’s sprinkler system had been activated. No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters.
In a release the ICFD reminds the public on the importance of smoke detectors and sprinkler systems. Smoke detectors are vital to alerting occupants to the presence of smoke, giving them crucial moments to safely exit the structure. Additionally, sprinkler systems help to mitigate the spread of fire.
Together, these devices help save lives and property in the instance of a fire. Smoke detector batteries should be changed every six months. Sprinkler systems are inspected annually by licensed contractors and findings are reported to the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office.
