A Coralville man faces possible prison time after an alleged assault on his romantic partner.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the 5th Street apartment of 42-year-old Wilmer Murcia. Police say he punched the victim in the face. The victim then fled to the bathroom, where Murcia forced his way in and hit the victim’s head against the wall. The victim then went to the bedroom and closed the door.  That’s when Murcia allegedly stabbed at the door with a knife in order to get in.

Once in the bedroom, Murcia reportedly got on top of the victim and shoved a rag into their mouth to prevent them from screaming.  He allegedly threatened to kill the victim during the assault.

The arrest report indicated the two parties have been romantically involved and lived together for 4 years.

Murcia was charged with Domestic Assault causing Injury, and Domestic Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
