Three Cedar Rapids men have been arrested after allegedly fleeing a downtown Iowa City traffic stop.
Iowa City Police pulled over a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder being driven by 22-year-old Keshawn Dixon of Summer Circle NE at 2:00 Saturday morning near the intersection of Clinton and College Streets. The vehicle was reportedly operating without its headlights activated.
Police say the vehicle smelled of marijuana, so Dixon and all of his passengers were told to get out. As officers searched the Pathfinder, Dixon and two passengers…identified as 22-year-old Kardell Muse of Iris Avenue NW and 23-year-old Dangelo Washpun of River Bluff Drive NW…reportedly fled the scene.
Police say just after 3 a.m. they found Dixon and Washpun inside another vehicle about a half-mile from the initial traffic stop. Muse was found in a nearby alley. He was reportedly in possession of a THC vape and his driver’s license, despite the license being suspended.
The officers who searched the vehicle report finding a baggie of marijuana near where Dixon and Washpun had been sitting. All three men are charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Interference With Official Acts. Dixon faces an added charge of Driving While Barred, and Muse is additionally charged with Unlawful Use of a License.
If convicted on all charges, Dixon faces a maximum of over three years in jail, with Muse and Washpun possibly facing up to 13 months behind bars.
