An Iowa City man was arrested on a warrant from an alleged assault just before Christmas.

Officers responded to a Westwinds Drive address the morning of December 23rd on reports of a fight between a male and female.  The man, identified as area transient Cortez Smith , had left the scene before police arrived.

The woman stated that the 30-year-old Smith came over to her apartment. When she asked him to leave, he reportedly got angry and believed she wanted to leave to see another man.  Smith allegedly hit her and caused her to fall to the ground, then continued to hit and kick her. The woman said Smith reportedly grabbed her hair and pulled a few braids from her scalp.

The woman was able to get outside and yell for help, causing Smith to flee the scene.

She was observed with bruising and swelling around her left eye, part of her hair pulled out, and a small scratch on her neck.

A warrant was issued December 30th and Smith was taken into custody Wednesday morning. He’s been charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor. If convicted, he faces up o a year in jail.

A no-contact order was requested by the victim.
