An area transient arrested for trying to steal a running vehicle in downtown Iowa City Friday night has now been accused of trying to disarm a deputy at the Johnson County Jail.

34-year-old Dale Eggerson reportedly entered a running Toyota located in a parking spot near the intersection of Linn and College streets at around 9:15pm Friday. Once confronted, he tried to leave the scene and allegedly scuffled with officers for several minutes before they were able to handcuff him.

Saturday morning just before 10:00,  Eggerson was being placed into a holding cell at the Jail when he allegedly lunged at a deputy and grabbed onto his vest near his neck and pushed him.  Eggerson was taken to the ground and he reportedly grabbed another deputy’s taser and started pulling on it to remove it from its holster.

Eggerson was charged with Disarming a Police Officer and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. Coupled with charges of 1st degree Theft, 3rd degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle and Interference with Official Acts from Friday’s incident, he could now be sentenced to up to 18 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
