An Iowa City man faces multiple charges after being pulled over for speeding Saturday.
Shortly before 10:30am, 20-year-old Lazaro Bwayo Bwayo of South Scott Boulevard was traveling southbound on Interstate 380, with a state trooper ahead of him. A rear radar check allegedly showed Bwayo’s Jeep Liberty going 87 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone.
After identifying the driver, a check of Bwayo’s record showed he was barred from driving for being an habitual offender until November 2028, and revoked for OWI test refusal until July 10th of next year. He also has five withdrawals in effect, and two OWI’s out of Johnson County.
Upon contact, an open container of Peaches vodka was reportedly found in the center console cup holder. Bwayo allegedly admitted to consuming at least one shot. After showing signs of impairment on tests, he refused all other field tests and a PBT. Bwayo eventually agreed to a Datamaster test, showing his breath-alcohol level at .148 percent.
He was taken into custody and faces 3rd offense OWI, Driving while Barred, Driving while Revoked, Driving while Suspended, and Alcohol Possession by a person under 21 charges. He faces a prison term of up to eight years if convicted on all counts.
