An Iowa City transient was taken into custody after allegedly trying to steal a vehicle parked downtown.
According to the arrest report, 34-year-old Dale Eggerson entered a running vehicle located in a parking spot near the intersection of Linn and College streets at around 9:15pm Friday. A police officer reportedly observed Eggerson attempting to engage the shifter and steering wheel, but it was locked due to the vehicle’s remote start system.
When confronted, Eggerson allegedly admitted that he was trying to steal the vehicle, a Toyota valued at approximately $10,500. He attempted to leave the scene and physically resisted arrest. Eggerson reportedly had to be restrained for several minutes before he was successfully handcuffed.
The owner told police that his center console had been rummaged through.
Eggerson was arrested and charged with 1st degree Theft, 3rd degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to over 12 years in prison.
