An early morning traffic stop has led to weapons and drug charges against an Iowa City man.

Johnson County deputies report pulling over a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder being driven by 29-year-old Randy Gipson of Amber Lane just before 4:15 Monday morning near the intersection of Scott Boulevard and Hickory Heights Lane. Arrest records indicate Gipson had run a red light and made an improper turn.

The deputy reports the Pathfinder smelled of marijuana. A probable cause search reportedly turned up a handgun under the driver’s seat and a pill bottle containing marijuana.

Gipson was arrested and charged with Person Ineligible to Carry a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of Marijuana. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
