A Cedar Rapids man has been arrested on drug and weapons charges in downtown Iowa City.

Iowa City Police say they saw 37-year-old Darrian Jefferson of Bel Air Drive SE enter the passenger seat of a 2012 Volkswagen parked outside Gabe’s on East Washington Street just after 12:30 Saturday morning. Officers had been approaching the car because it was illegally parked in a handicapped spot.

Police say the vehicle smelled of marijuana, leading to a probable cause search. A baggie of marijuana was allegedly found on the floorboard next to Jefferson’s feet. Two pistols were also reportedly found, including one inside a satchel Jefferson had been wearing when he entered the vehicle. Jefferson reportedly claimed the satchel, the pistol and the marijuana were not his, and that he had just located the satchel and decided to wear it.

Jefferson is currently under a protective order that prohibits him from carrying firearms.

Jefferson is charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser, Possession of a Controlled Substance – 2nd Offense, and Violating of a Protective Order. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
