The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program. The money will be used for improvements to the Sycamore Greenway Trail, which runs from Lakeside Drive across from Grant Wood Elementary School past Kountry Lane to the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park.

REAP invests in projects that enhance and protect Iowa’s natural and cultural resources. The latest grant for Iowa City will be used for the removal of undesirable plants, planting of native species, and improvements to trailside features, including benches and bicycle amenities on the Sycamore Greenway. City officials say the improvements will help restore the stormwater infrastructure capacity of the Sycamore Greenway, improve wildlife habitat, and improve trailside offerings for recreationists utilizing this popular trail.

Over the past 35 years the city of Iowa City has obtained more than $2,563,500 in REAP funds. The most recent REAP grant award is being used for ecological restoration and trail improvements at the historic Ned Ashton House. More information about REAP grant projects can be found online.
