A woman faces numerous charges after Iowa City Police say she assaulted the father of her child, tried to hit a woman with a cane, and left her children alone in a Coralville motel.
Officers were called to an address on California Avenue just after 7:45 Monday night. Witnesses say they were trying to speak with the son of one of the men present when 36-year-old Sarah Staka…who lists her address as the Super 7 motel on Hayden Fry Way in Coralville…got out of her car and charged into a garage where the man was located. When the man tried to keep Staka out of the garage, she allegedly struck him in the head with her hands. Staka then reportedly grabbed a cane out of a nearby garbage can and tried to hit a female with it. Staka and the male have a child together, who was present during the altercation. She allegedly dragged the child back to her car.
Police arrested Staka after she had to be pulled from her vehicle at the Scooter’s Coffee near her motel. Officers learned she had allegedly left her children alone back at her room. Arriving officers found a 12-year-old in the main room, with a two-year-old and three-year-old locked in a bathroom.
Staka is charged with 2nd Degree Burglary, Domestic Abuse Assault, Assault, 3rd Degree Harassment, Interference With Official Acts, and four counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of over 18 years in prison.
