A North Liberty man is accused of dealing drugs out of the parking lot of a Kum & Go, as well as other locations in Iowa City.
Iowa City Police say they followed the suspect, 18-year-old Gage Grother of the Holiday Lodge manufactured housing community, as he made his rounds Saturday night. Grother allegedly took money from a woman who walked up to the window of his Buick Lacrosse and gave him money. He then drove away.
Police followed Grother to a local Kum & Go, where he reportedly parked next to another car, got out, and got into the back seat of the other vehicle with a drawstring bag. Police say Grother got out a short time later, returned to his car, and drove to another location where he met briefly with two other individuals and left the scene.
Investigators believed Grother was dealing drugs, and they continued following him until he allegedly turned the wrong way on Governor Street. A traffic stop was initiated at Burlington and Madison Streets just after 6:45 p.m. Police say they could see marijuana residue inside Grother’s car, and a search of the vehicle reportedly turned up multiple marijuana carts, cash, and an open bottle of Hennessey. A knife with a blade longer than 5 inches was located between the driver’s seat and the center console.
Grother is charged with a Controlled Substance Violation and Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
