Iowa City Police say a suspect threatened to kill three of the department’s officers.
Officers located 31-year-old Brian Almendarez of Prairie du Chien Road having trouble maintaining his balance as he walked along Lower Muscatine Road near Pine Street just before 3:45 Saturday morning. Police say he showed signs of intoxication, was wearing a bar wristband, and smelled of ingested alcohol and marijuana. When Almendarez reached into his pocket for his ID, several marijuana buds reportedly fell out.
Almendarez allegedly became irate when he was placed under arrest. Police say he made individual threats to kill three different officers and refused breath testing.
Almendarez is charged with three counts of 1st Degree Harassment and one count each of Possession of Marijuana and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over seven years in jail.
