A state senator from Iowa City has been tabbed to lead the Iowa Senate Democrats.

On Friday, the caucus elected Janice Weiner as its leader. Weiner is wrapping up her first term serving District 45, which includes eastern Iowa City, southwest Iowa City, and University Heights. She previously served as an Iowa City City Councilor and a foreign services officer with the U.S. State Department.

Weiner succeeds Dubuque’s Pam Jochum, who is retiring after serving in the Iowa Legislature for the last 30 years.

When the next legislative session begins on January 13th, Democrats will hold only 15 of 50 senate seats.
