A prison sentence has been handed down to a transient who stabbed another man in the chest and threw him into the Iowa River.

Iowa City Police say last March 48-year-old Yossarian Williams was engaged in an argument with another subject near the Benton Street Bridge when he stabbed the man in the chest and threw him into the river, telling him he was going to die.  The man had emergency surgery at the University of Iowa Campus Medical Center.

Williams, whose driver’s license indicates is a resident of the state of Washington, was charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. If convicted, he would have faced a maximum of ten years in prison. Last week Williams reached a deal with prosecutors, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, and was given a two-year jail sentence by Judge Andrew Chappell.
