An Iowa City woman was arrested after an investigation determined she cashed bad checks at an area credit union.
Police say 22-year-old Kiera Bell of Dunuggan Court went to the Veridian Credit Union branch on the Coralville Strip at around 5:30pm on October 20 and attempted to cash a bad check, successfully receiving nearly $3400.
Bell allegedly returned about fifteen minutes later and cashed another check for over $2900.
She attempted to cash a third check, but the bank stated the checks were fraudulent and froze the check.
Police interviewed Bell over the phone, and she reportedly mentioned that she had cashed the checks, but didn’t think it was illegal.
The bank was out a total of $6591.21 due to the alleged fraud.
A warrant was issued, and Bell was charged with 2nd degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted.
