An area transient faces jail time after allegedly stealing hundreds of dollars in merchandise from the Iowa City Walmart.

Officers were called to the Highway 1 store Sunday afternoon after loss prevention allegedly saw 43-year-old Brian Luedtka concealing items.  When they arrived, Luedtka reportedly ran out of the store with a large bag filled with items valued at over $900.

Luedtka allegedly continued to run and police lost sight of him.  Surveillance video saw him reportedly take off some items of clothing and get on a bike. He was observed in the store’s parking lot and apprehended.

A Walmart employee identified Luedtka as the man who stole the merchandise. A post arrest search allegedly found him in possession of meth.

Luedtka was charged with 3rd degree theft and meth possession. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted on both counts.
