An Iowa City woman arrested on a weapons charge last spring now faces a new charge after police say she provided a convicted felon with a firearm.

31-year-old Shauntaya Murphy was a passenger in a car that was pulled over outside her Sandusky Drive residence just before 5:00 on the evening of March 11th. The vehicle reportedly had the odor of marijuana, and a probable cause search was conducted.

Police say Murphy’s purse contained a loaded Stoeger 9mm pistol and marijuana.

Murphy’s residence reportedly also smelled of marijuana, and when taken into custody she allegedly told officers that she was, quote, “actually looking for weed all day.”

Murphy was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Person Ineligible to Carry a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on both counts, she faces up to two years in jail.

Iowa City Police now say Murphy allowed her boyfriend, who is a convicted felon, to possess the gun. She now faces an additional charge of Prohibited Transfer of a Firearm to a Felon. If convicted on that charge, she faces a maximum of five years in prison.
