An Iowa City man has been arrested after an investigation determined that he wrote tens of thousands of dollars in bad checks and able to withdraw cash from multiple accounts before his alleged crimes were discovered.

Police say between December 26th 2023 and the end of January 2024, transient Benjamin Rodgers knowingly wrote bad checks and fraudulently deposited them into multiple accounts.  The 24- year old reportedly deposited nearly $39,400 into different accounts, and either withdrew or spent over $17,399 of the fraudulently deposited or acquired money.

Rodgers allegedly committed these acts at multiple different locations throughout Iowa City. Subpeonas were sent out to each bank involved, and the transactions were verified.

A warrant was issued, and Rodgers was booked into the Johnson County Jail early Thursday. He’s been charged with first degree Theft and could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison if convicted.
