A routine traffic stop in Iowa City has led to weapons and drug charges against a Des Moines County man.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says it pulled over a 2012 Chevy Traverse for speeding on southbound Highway 218 just north of the Melrose Avenue exit just before 12:45 Saturday morning. An open bottle of tequila was found inside the vehicle. One of the passengers, identified as 37-year-old Shavoka Grimes of Burlington, was reportedly found near a stolen Ruger Max 9 and a jar containing a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana. Deputies say Grimes admitted the items were his and that he had been smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. Grimes has previous domestic abuse and marijuana convictions out of Johnson County from 2010 and 2015, respectively.

Grimes is charged with Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon While Intoxicated, Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Domestic Abuser, and Possession of a Controlled Substance  – 2nd Offense. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 13 years in prison.
