An Iowa City man was arrested after an investigation determined he attempted to steal a vehicle over the summer.

18-year-old Corieon Cornell of West Benton Street was observed on security video with other suspects breaking the window of a parked unoccupied vehicle on Hawkeye Court during the noon hour on July 25th.  The video allegedly showed Cornell climbing in and attempting to “hotwire” the ignition system in an attempt to steal the vehicle.

The steering column was damaged as a result of the attempted theft.

A latent fingerprint in the vehicle led police to charge Cornell with 3rd degree burglary of a motor vehicle and 4th degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on the charges, Cornell could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
