An Iowa City man was arrested Sunday after allegedly being seen assaulting a woman while driving.

Witnesses reported seeing 60-year-old Kent Campion of 2nd Avenue heading southbound on 1st Avenue at approximately 4:50pm hitting the victim in the passenger seat multiple times.  A police officer located the described vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Campion reportedly got out of the vehicle immediately and showed signs of intoxication. They included bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and the odor of ingested alcohol.  He submitted to field sobriety tests and showed measurable impairment.  A PBT reportedly showed his breath-alcohol level at .128 percent.  Campion refused chemical testing.

The woman in Campion’s vehicle had multiple injuries to her face that were bruised and bleeding.  She allegedly admitted to a history of domestic violence with Campion, and said she tried to jump out of the vehicle to get away from him.

Campion was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury and 1st offense OWI. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
