Washington man faces felony weapons charges after welfare check on unresponsive motorist in Kalona

A welfare check on an unresponsive motorist in Kalona has led to felony weapons charges against a Washington County man.

Washington County dispatch records show just after 10:15 last Saturday night a caller reported finding a vehicle that had body damage and a bumper ripped off parked near Kalona Tire on Highway 1. The driver was reportedly unresponsive to knocks on the window.

Medical crews were called off and Washington County deputies arrested 22-year-old Jarod Smith of Washington for Driving While Barred, Open Container, Possession of a Firearm By A Felon, Possession of a Firearm By A Domestic Abuser, and Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons. Further charges are pending OWI test results.

If convicted on all current charges against him, Smith faces a maximum of 13 years in prison.
