An employee of University of Iowa Health Care accused of using her access to medical records to cyberstalk her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend has reached a plea deal.

30-year-old Sara Safsaf of Melrose Avenue entered the plea on Monday. Investigators say Safsaf would wait outside her boyfriend’s house to see which women were visiting, then follow them in her car after they left. Safsaf allegedly used her position with UIHC to access one such woman’s medical records without permission on multiple occasions between December of 2022 and January of 2024. She also reportedly set up multiple fake social media accounts to annoy and alarm the woman.

UI Police say Safsaf also used her UIHC computer access to illegally look at her boyfriend’s medical records on multiple occasions. She allegedly used a different phone number to communicate with the man about his other girlfriend while concealing her true identity.

Safsaf was initially charged with eight counts of Unauthorized Computer Access, two counts of Stalking Using a Technological Device and one count of 3rd Degree Harassment. If convicted on all charges, she would have faced a maximum of over 36 years in prison.

Terms of the plea deal and a sentencing date have not been released.
