University of Iowa Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault on campus.
According to the UI Campus Safety website, the UIPD received a report of a sexual assault that occurred between 11:45 Saturday night and 12:20 Sunday morning at an eastside residence hall. The assault was reported to be perpetrated by an acquaintance.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the UIPD at 319-335-5022, or text Campus Safety using the Rave Guardian app.
The UI’s recently-released Clery report indicates sexual assaults more than doubled on campus from 2022 to 2023, although the numbers were still lower than in 2021. Fondling reports, in particular, reached an all-time high in 2023.
UI officials told The Daily Iowan that the 2023 numbers were skewed because half of the reported cases could be tied to one person: a former UI health worker. The cases spanned several years, but were only reported last year.
44-year-old James Burkhalter of Coral Court in Coralville is a former UI social worker. He’s currently facing nine counts of Sexual Exploitation by a Counselor or Therapist.
