Iowa City plans to buy two properties on Summit Street for the purpose of building affordable housing.

The Gazette reports the city is spending $750,000 on the two parcels, with a combined 1.85 acres, located at 1002 and 1006 North Summit Street.

Funding comes from the $1.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars set aside for affordable housing.

Neighborhood Development Services Director Tracy Hightshoe says the properties are optimal for public housing due to their proximity to grocery stores, gas stations, neighborhood services and public transit.

The properties are large enough to accommodate more than 30 affordable housing units. The Iowa City Housing Authority will manage the units when completed.

The plan is currently in pre-development, with a timeline yet to be determined.
