Iowa City Police say a restaurant employee told them a month’s worth of deposits were stolen from her car when she accidentally left them inside.

The investigation began in August when the owner of Jimmy John’s on North Dodge Street noticed $8,468.04 was missing from the restaurant’s bank account. The store manager, 45-year-old Jillian Begg of the Western Hill Estates manufactured housing community in Coralville, reportedly claimed she had not been conducting the daily deposits for May. In early June she allegedly bagged up all of the May deposits and put them in her car with the intent of depositing the money into the bank. Police say Begg claimed she forgot the money as she was making other stops, and left it in her car overnight. She reportedly told them the money was gone the next morning and was likely stolen during one of her stops as she discovered her power locks didn’t work.

Begg also allegedly admitted to using new daily deposits to try and cover the losses, including altering the dates over the course of July and August.

Begg is charged with 2nd Degree Fraudulent Practices. If convicted, she faces a maximum of five years in prison.
