After being completely shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, University of Iowa students are once again studying abroad.

The Gazette reports the most popular destinations are the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain.  527 students were studying across 47 countries in the 2021-22 academic year. That jumped to 1058 the next year, but dropped to 933 in the 2023-24 school year.

Pre-pandemic, as many as 1429 students were participating in the study abroad program.

Conversely, international enrollment at the U of I has fallen.  After peaking at 4550 students in 2015, the figure dropped to 2509 at the outset of the pandemic. That figure has continued to drop, with 1504 students enrolled at the University of Iowa last fall.
