Fire damaged a home in Hills Sunday morning.

The Hills Fire Department says a unit was called away from an appearance at the 4H pancake breakfast at the Johnson County Fairgrounds and dispatched to 306 Adams Street just before 9:30 for a basement fire where the residents had already successfully evacuated. Firefighters from Lone Tree and Riverside soon followed.

First-arriving crews found a single-story residential duplex with smoke showing from multiple windows. Hills personnel found a fire on a tool bench in the basement and extinguished it within minutes of being on the scene. Fire was found to have extended from the basement into the above bedroom of the residence and was also extinguished.

The fire that extended into the bedroom was contained by a closed door, which did not allow it to extend further into the first floor. The Hills fire department says that detail should serve as a reminder to close your doors when sleeping.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The fire displaced one occupant.
The residence was found with smoke detectors that were inoperable and did not alert the occupant.
